December 2008

Happy Holidays from ISHR Group

In times like these, your colleagues and employees more than likely are dealing with high-levels of stress in their personal lives.  Factors such as the dwindling housing market, fluctuating gas prices and a rise in unemployment serve as daily reminders for individuals before they begin each work day.  Add to it the normal stress  associated with the November/December holiday season and you may be dealing with some extra-stressed out colleagues.

We recently read the following quote and loved the visual it provided:

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass.
It's about learning to dance in the rain."

It will take exceptional leadership and teamwork to pull the focus back to the job at hand and rebuild confidence and security in your company's core values and goals. The ISHR Group understands this need, and we are continually evolving as a company to ensure that we effectively execute our mission as a full-service HR Consulting Firm.   With our iAdvance, Leadership ROI, and HR OptIn services, we are taking our expertise and commitment to a whole new level!

The ISHR Group is wishing you a joyous Holiday Season with your family, friends and colleagues.  Regardless of how you celebrate the holidays, we hope your celebration is filled with balance, renewal, joy, and peace.  As the new year approaches, we hope you recognize many blessings in your life.

ISHR Group Departments

For the past year, our one-on-one leadership assessments and comprehensive feedback sessions have evolved into follow-on coaching ranging from individual development plans to team building sessions all centered around leadership effectiveness.  We have taken this new format and put it to use by working to leverage strengths and addressing any developmental needs that are uncovered through our rigorous assessments. Participants have indicated that our iAdvance process has been the most impactful developmental opportunity in their career to date.

Most of our intensive training has been at the mid- and senior levels.  We are seeing that hiring new employees is no longer just a focus for the HR department, but has now become a priority for operating leaders in the company as well.  Our objective is to train high-level executives to approach hiring from a different angle by having the foresight to acknowledge that more than just technical skills are needed from a candidate.  We understand that hiring is a costly practice if not done right; therefore, extensive coaching is needed to effectively keep the process consistent and focus on cultural fit and motivation in addition to skills and experience.

Along with our clients' need for more coaching, we are continuing to revolutionize our iAdvance curriculum and many companies are taking notice. For instance, we just finished working with a Fortune 500 company on their recent acquisition.  Our specialized training facilitated a smooth transition by enabling the new leadership team to come together and adopt the processes and philosophies of the corporation.  Our client found that using us as a tool to integrate new leaders into their culture had a positive effect on the acquisition as a whole.

Our continued growth is referral based and that is why meeting our clients' needs is so inherent to our business. With our focus on individual coaching and the continuation of our iAdvance assessment courses, we are receiving positive feedback from our clients and a demand for more.  That demand is taking us all across the globe from NBC Universal in New York to Phillips Lighting in the Netherlands.

Leadership Development is the cornerstone of all great companies and their success.  As a result, the ISHR Group has further developed our existing modules to enable our clients to achieve greatness.

From our assessments, we have found that leaders struggle most with rectifying the difference between feedback and coaching. With our Leader Relationship Model, leaders should see themselves as coaches, mentors and advisors to their teams.  All three differ in outcome and process, but are very applicable in everyday business particularly in more contemporary cultures where employees expect more frequent and direct feedback regarding performance and effectiveness.  Two inhibitors we uncovered when working with our clients are a lack of time and knowledge/tools needed for effective coaching.  We have taken the Leadership Relationship Model and eliminated both impediments by showing company leaders that effective coaching can be a powerful means that saves time and effort in the long run.
One of our most successful and effective modules to date is called PRIDE.  The PRIDE acronym consists of 5 powerful thought-provoking questions that force one to reflect on how he or she is perceived, how they are contributing, whether they are being challenged for continuous growth, and their overall leadership effectiveness in their organization.  PRIDE provides real-time feedback and action items, therefore, dramatically providing opportunities for personal growth.

As we continue to forge innovative and effective leadership courses, our clients are continuing to express their satisfaction after attending one of our courses.
  • The course was very insightful not only for understanding my behaviors, but also how they are perceived outside of myself.
  • The class blew me away.  Absolutely loved it!
  •  Beyond expectations!  It was excellent. I got more out of this course than all the others put together.
  • Well above expectations.  Forced me to think twice about myself and the perceptions I give off. This will enhance my career.

The awareness of one's own thinking style and the thinking styles of others combined with the ability to act outside of one's preferred thinking style is known as "Whole Brain® Thinking." This
methodology has been scientifically proven to help individuals at all levels to become more cooperative and productive, and can lead to heightened levels of employee and team  performance.

Much of our work centers around using the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) with leaders and their teams.  Imagine the value of knowing how a team is comprised in thinking and communication style.  Does the team tend to focus solely on analytical thinking to the demise of thinking about interpersonal ramifications?  Does the team primarily focus on 'getting things done' and 'banging out the details of the project plan' without taking the necessary time to imagine all the possibilities and provide a strategic perspective?

By working with a leadership team who has completed an HBDI Team Assessment, we are not only able to provide each team member with a more valued understanding on his/her thinking perspectives, but more importantly, we can provide the team with a snapshot of how they operate as an entity.  This powerful visual serves as a vivid reflection of what strengths that team may be leveraging, and those areas where the team can improve.  Often times, just the awareness of how the team 'prefers' to think and operate can yield significant changes in team effectiveness highlighting the adage that awareness is often half the battle.

As the struggling economy continues to affect employment, jobseekers must take steps to leverage their skills and talent in the uninviting marketplace. During many of our conversations with HR professionals, we have found that there appears to be a lack of networking both professionally and personally. We cannot stress enough how vital networking is in order to strategically position yourself within the HR industry.  Fortunately, there are many networking sources from which to choose. The website LinkedIn, for example, offers a professional social networking environment with real-time connection to other HR Specialists and company leaders searching for your expertise.

In the HR Industry, we are continuing to see a need for experienced and skilled HR generalists and specialists. With our drive to meet those needs of the client, we strive to ensure when an HR candidate is placed with a company, it is a "good fit" for all involved.  We believe we have done our job when we receive testimonials such as this:

Working with HR OptIn is an experience like no other.  The ease of communicating and the speed at which job placement takes place is superb.  The staff at HR OptIn is readily available to answer any questions while thoroughly researching the proper channels by which to  make a decision.  I have personally been working as a consultant for  over 5 years now and HR OptIn (and the client) definitely has the upper hand in their nitch of the consulting market.   Thank you, Christina

Opting In / Giving Back: In the spirit of the holidays, we are proud to remind our consultants and our clients about our Opting In / Giving Back Program.  Every time we place a consultant on assignment, we make a donation in that person's honor to the charity of his or her choice that supports women and/or children globally.  Some of the organizations we supported in 2008 included  The Grameen Foundation, The Ronald McDonald House, NY Charities, and the Race for the Cure.

Visit HROptIn and see the difference that the  brightest HR talent...and the greatest HR options...can make for you.
HR Executive Magazine: The August 2008 issue highlighted the ISHR Group and our Leadership ROI curriculum as a best practice.  The premise of the article?  Although leadership development may have become a 'lost art' at many organizations, HR Professionals consider it a top concern and continue to rely on best practices for building the leaders of tomorrow.

The October 2008 issue featured an article written by our own Ellen Dotts summarizing our findings after having completed thousands of iAdvance Assessments globally.  Read more to find out what we discovered are traits that set successful leaders apart.

ISHR Group is proud to have been a member of the National Host Committee for the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) annual conference held in Atlanta in June 2008.

ISHR Group is pleased to have become a member of the Women Presidents Organization (WPO).
