Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument Consulting FAQ

How would I use the HBDI tool for my team?

We use HBDI in team assimilation and team building activities quite frequently to help teams gain in-depth understanding as to how their team thinks, processes information and prefers to work. It shows trends and gaps and clarifies the preference of the team as a whole, and where there is a need to collaborate and/or allocate resources more effectively to get better results. We have found that the team analysis with HBDI is a powerful tool which yields uncommon results for teams and individuals on the team.

How do I use the HBDI tool for personal development?

The HBDI provides insight into the way one prefers to think, communicate, process information and make decisions. This new awareness can help individuals to be more at ease with themselves and more perceptive about people who think and behave differently. It helps leaders understand how to coach others, manage conflict, embrace change, make decisions and communicate more effectively. We use the tool for individual coaching and leadership development along with our leadership assessments because of the impact it has on one’s self-awareness.

Is the HBDI a validated tool?

Yes, the HBDI was originally validated by C. Victor Bunderson, Ph.D. in 1980. The HBDI is continually validated to prove that it provides a valid, reliable measure of human mental preferences when applied in a professional way, interpreted in conformity with the four-quadrant model, and scored with the approved scoring method.

How does the HBDI differ from other tools on the market?

HBDI is scientifically-based and has a physiological premise whereas many of the other tools have a behavioral or psychological premise. In other words, it is the product of numerous studies using electroencephalographic (EEG) data from the brains of several test subjects responding to a battery of psychological tests. It was literally developed by studying the neural activity of subjects as they performed tasks, thought about issues and looked at visuals. Other tools provide insight into one’s behavior and are all valuable for self-awareness but we have found that the HBDI is most grounded scientifically. In addition, we have found in our experience that the HBDI profile is more readily understood, accepted and remembered.
